**Community Support Worker - Residential**
Full Time - 40 hours per week
$23.38 - $29.10
Lower Hutt location
We currently have a role available with our children's respite house at Spectrum Care covering early mornings, after school, evenings and weekends. We have a full-time opportunity available. We're looking for team members to help kids and teenagers with intellectual disabilities to feel safe and have fun while staying at our respite house in Lower Hutt.
You will need to know how to liven things up, and calm things down, to notice how children are feeling, and to provide them with guidance, comfort or support as needed. You will need to be vigilant, warm, and creative. Additionally, as the children have a vast range of communication styles, an ability or interest in learning to find effective ways to communicate is very much preferred.
**Skills & Experience**
- Empathy for the challenges of trying to build an ordinary life while living with a disability
- Energy to keep up with someone who likes to be on the go a lot
- Ability to remain calm, and calming, in all situations
- Resilience to help people keep boundaries to ensure their safety
- Good at explaining and negotiating
- Ability to communicate effectively and supportively with family, colleagues and the person you support
- Ability and willingness to provide support and motivation with personal cares and daily living skills
- An interest in attaining a Community Support Worker Level Three or above qualification
- we can support you to achieve this while you work
- Experience supporting people with disabilities, and or mental health issues, and/or behaviours that can be challenging is desirable but not necessary
- Reliability, commitment, and passion for working with people
- The empathy and willingness to support children with their personal cares, such as bathing, dressing and toileting.
- Moderate level of fitness
- A full New Zealand driver's license (Essential)
- Able to pass a NZ police check
- Basic computer skills
