About the role
We have an opportunity as a Cyber Security Advisor for applicants who have the drive and determination to ensure that Police operates safely and successfully. This position within the Cyber Security Team, based at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Wellington.
You will provide expertise in the security standards, monitoring and processes used to keep Police information safe.
You will have led the technical response to cyber security within your existing role and would like to make the move to an organisation with the focus and resources to allow you to progress your career in cyber security.

The Police Cyber Security Centre are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual to fill an advisor position responsible for supporting the organisation’s internet facing assets. This is an exciting opportunity to defend critical parts of the New Zealand capability and data, working to ensure these essential services remain operational and protected against compromise. This role requires initiative and proactive thought and is responsible for leading the portfolio and others to success. Success in this role requires the ability to influence others to make change and bringing them along the journey. We need someone who understands security, risk and technology, but also has the ability to translate this into language and action for a wide range of people both within, and external to Police.
We are seeking the right person for the role, and while technical expertise is desirable, it is not critical. Do you have an aptitude and a strong interest in cyber security? Do you bring other expertise from other walks of life? Do you understand how threat actors think and know how to translate that into defence? We want to hear from you. Many of the skills, knowledge and experience we seek comes from other areas of life.
- Perimeter attack surface management
- Experience in developing attack surface reduction strategies and system hardening
- Verify, scope, contain assess and remediate threats
- Leading and supporting incident response
- Writing risk assessments
- Public facing and drive-by threats
- Base level knowledge of cyber and technical knowledge such as IP addressing, DNS, networking protocols, threat modelling and risk assessment
- Open source intelligence (OSINT) concepts and familiar with OSINT tools such as Shodan
- General familiarity or understanding of security tools such as NMAP, Wireshark and Netcat
- Knowledge or understanding of security frameworks such as the NZISM, MITRE ATT&CK, NIST, CIS, or ISO
- Knowledge or understanding of security standards and practices
