This role is one of three new roles in the Review and Improvement Services (RIS) business group in the Education Review Office (ERO). Reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive - RIS, the Director Schools is tasked with delivering a national work programme focused on improving outcomes for New Zealand students within schools and driving the move from a regionally based operating model to a national approach in the schools workstream.
You will have both a passion for and an understanding of the sector with the drive to achieve results across Aotearoa through a ‘collaboration and partnership' approach. You will have a well-developed understanding of Te Ao Māori and tikanga as it relates to education or public sector practice, and an ability to be able to engage effectively with people at all levels. You will be a trusted senior leader with sound experience of working in a complex environment and of building high performing teams, confident when working with ambiguity and known for your ability to build trusting relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
ERO is accountable for evaluating and reporting on the pre-tertiary education and care of students in schools and early childhood services. Its driving force is a belief that a quality education is the right of every child and young person in Aotearoa New Zealand on their educational pathway, from early childhood learning until they leave school. ERO lives by its Whakataukī: Ko te Tamaiti te Pūtake o te Kaupapa, The Child — the Heart of the Matter. Its reports are used by parents, teachers, early childhood education managers, school principals and trustees, and by government policy makers.
RIS carries out external evaluations at early childhood services, schools and kura to provide information on their performance and to support improvement for high quality education. The position of Director Schools has been created to lead ERO's review and improvement strategy, functions and service delivery relating to schools workstreams.
