Toitū te marae a Tāne, toitū te marae a Tangaroa, toitū te tangata.
If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.
The Department of Conservation's vision is for Aotearoa, New Zealand is to be the greatest living space on Earth. It is responsible for some of the most important issues facing Aotearoa, New Zealand: how to look after our unique environment in a way that benefits current and future generations. It grapples with issues as challenging as maintaining our unique biodiversity and providing for the increasing number of tourists coming to visit our beautiful places.
The Strategy and Policy Group provides the strategic direction and thought leadership for DOC and for the conservation system. The group ensures DOC has the right frameworks and settings in place to deliver on our outcomes for conservation, to meet Government priorities, and to be an honourable Treaty partner. It also supports the Senior Leadership Team to develop, deliver, and measure progress on our strategy.
Mō te tūnga | About the role
We have policy opportunities available across our Resource Management and Tourism and Economic Development policy teams. We are looking for smart, inquisitive, and ambitious senior policy advisors and policy advisors with a passion for providing high quality advice to join our policy group.
You will have government policy experience, potentially including knowledge of the Resource Management Act 1991 and its implementation, climate change, or balancing environmental protection with resource use. Experience with budget, stakeholder engagement and public consultation would also be beneficial.
You will be working on reform of the resource management system and existing RMA policy, climate change policy with an emphasis on nature-based solutions, or policy related to managing and protecting public conservation land while providing for commercial activities.
In this role, you will influence and support legislative change that meets the needs of our Minister, Treaty partners, and senior leaders. The position will expose you to critical parts of the policy cycle and may include providing Cabinet advice on critical conservation policy, Treaty partner and stakeholder engagement, and drafting legislative amendments.
At a senior advisory level, you play a leadership role within the team, coaching and leading policy advisors across the wider team.
Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you
Alongside interesting and varied day-to-day work, we have a collegial and supportive working environment where you can test your thinking and ideas.
DOC is committed to building a workplace where our differences are recognised, respected, and embraced. Our organisation's success is dependent on our people feeling valued for their differences, empowered to contribute, and respected for what they bring to their role.
The positions are based at our Wellington office on Manners Street, close by to great cafes and Cuba Street.
We offer flexible working as standard, so if you are looking for a role that will give you professional challenge, whilst maintaining a work-life balance, this could be the role for you.
Please specify in your covering letter whether you'd like to be considered for either senior or policy advisor level.
He kōrero mōu | What we are looking for
We are looking for motivated and passionate people with a genuine interest in environmental or conservation policy.
**You will also have**:
- Strong policy analysis skills coupled with previous experience working with and advising senior leaders and Ministers at a strategic level (for senior policy advisors)
- Proven experience leading complex project-based policy work in a pragmatic and agile way
- Well-developed stakeholder management skills including experience building and maintaining relationships with internal and external partners
- Strong critical thinking capability - adept at identifying critical issues and risks when undertaking policy analysis, and provides pragmatic solutions to problems
- Ability to mentor and manaaki other colleagues in their work; and
- Cultural awareness - understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi including the willingness to engage in Te Ao Māori concepts and/or understanding tikanga Māori.
As part of a small but pivotal unit, your ability to work with and through others, both in and outside of the department, will be critical. As will your ability to think through policy problems clearly and impartially, and to communicate your advice in an accessible and compelling way.
Above all, we are looking for someone who feels inspired, day in day out and connected to our united purpose: Papatūānuku Thrives.
