**Nga kawenga | About the role**

As a Principal Research Adviser, you'll lead high-level research and evaluation projects that play a key role in shaping policy development and improving service delivery. You will ensure that data collection, analysis, and reporting are of the highest quality, helping to drive the Department's core objectives of reducing reoffending, improving public safety, and addressing Maori over-representation.

You will design and deliver projects, while also providing advice to both internal teams and external stakeholders. You will be expected to undertake fieldwork, conducting interviews with frontline staff and people managed by Corrections. This will require strong relationship building and interpersonal skills, and experience undertaking research with Maori.

Part of your role will include managing research contracts, making sure everything stays on track, and guiding external contractors when needed. You need to be able to use advanced tools to analyse data and prepare reports that will be shared with both internal teams and external audiences. You will bring high level qualitative and quantitative technical expertise to this role.

This is a critical role where your work will directly influence policy and strategic decisions, with your insights helping to shape the future direction of the Department and contribute to better outcomes for the people it manages.

**Nga pukenga me nga wheako | Skills and experience**

You will need to have:

- Significant experience designing and leading research and evaluation projects, preferably within the government sector.
- Knowledge of New Zealand's Corrections and criminal justice system
- High level written and oral communication skills, with experience of presenting research results to diverse audiences.
- Well-developed qualitative and quantitative technical expertise, descriptive statistical analysis and NVivo experience is essential.
- Experience undertaking research with Maori, and an understanding of Kaupapa Maori methodology

A current New Zealand License is essential as there will be travel around New Zealand.

**Utu a-tau | Salary**

The midpoint of the salary range is $141,651 per annum and the full range (85%-120%) is $120,404 - $169,982 per annum. Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
