Join us at Foodstuffs North Island as a **Senior Software Engineer - Backend** and help shape the future of retail by building software that blends the digital and physical worlds — creating smarter, more intuitive experiences for our customers and teams. We’re on an exciting journey to become a truly customer insights-driven and efficient co-op, and our Digital Engineering team is right at the heart of that transformation.

In this role, you won’t just write code — you’ll help design, build, and scale modern digital products that make life easier for millions of New Zealanders. You’ll work with a talented cross-functional team, get stuck into a wide range of challenges, and mentor others while continuing to sharpen your own skills. Think modern tech stack, agile ways of working, high-quality code, and a healthy CI/CD pipeline — all with a focus on value, simplicity, and speed.

**What you'll be doing**:

- Designing and developing robust, scalable, customer-facing backend microservices across our digital stack.
- Designing and developing robust, scalable software across full-stack layers, with performance and reliability top of mind.
- Writing clean, well-tested code and contributing to a culture of quality through code reviews, documentation, and engineering best practices.
- Collaborating with product owners, delivery leads and stakeholders to translate user needs into smart, technical solutions.
- Leading by example — helping shape engineering standards, supporting teammates, and actively reducing tech debt.
- Working in a fast-moving agile environment, contributing to backlog grooming, user story refinement, and continuous delivery.

**He kōrero mōu - About you**

You’re an experienced software engineer with a strong technical foundation and a passion for building reliable, scalable systems that make a real difference. With over seven years in the industry, you’ve worked across different environments — from enterprise to start-ups — and have delivered software across the full lifecycle. You care deeply about clean architecture, writing maintainable code, and finding the right balance between innovation and practicality.

**You’ll bring**:

- A relevant Bachelor’s degree in software development, computer science, or a related field.
- Experience in designing and developing microservices in Java SpringBoot and Node.js frameworks.
- 7+ years of hands-on programming experience using modern languages and frameworks.
- A strong focus on high-quality, maintainable, and scalable code that performs well in real-world environments.
- End-to-end software delivery experience across a range of settings, from agile product teams to consultancy and enterprise projects.
