Labour inspectors are responsible for ensuring that employers are compliant with legislative provisions relating to the payment of the minimum wage, holiday and leave entitlements, written employment agreements, and mandatory record keeping requirements. One day you could be visiting a restaurant to investigate a minimum wage complaint, the next you could be at a construction site to assess whether employees have compliant employment agreements. On your days in the office, you will be reviewing records provided by employers and employees, developing spreadsheets to calculate employee entitlements, and writing up your findings.
**As Labour Inspector, you will be**:
- Interviewing employers and employees about compliance with minimum employment standards
- Using a range of techniques to gather evidence to assess whether noncompliance has occurred, including creating spreadsheets to calculate employee entitlements
- Writing clear, professional investigation reports that explain your investigation findings
- Drafting and issuing enforcement documents, such as infringement notices, improvement notices and enforceable undertakings
- Managing your own cases through the Employment Relations Authority and Employment Court.

- A strong interest in public service and community wellbeing
- Exceptional people skills with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of people and cultures
- A strong interest and/or study towards developing a career in employment relations
- The ability to ask the right questions to quickly obtain the information required from employers and employees
- The ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to problem-solve issues
- The ability to remain unbiased and consider all evidence before forming a conclusion
- The ability to effectively manage a varied caseload with competing deadlines
- Well-developed written and verbal communications skills
- Previous experience in an analytical, regulatory, or compliance role (desirable)
- New Zealand Certificate in Regulatory Compliance - Level 3 (desirable)
- Hold a current full New Zealand driver’s license (required)
- Be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident (required)
