Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
Our Clinical Coders analyse and classify incoming medical data about diseases, injuries, and causes of injury in accordance with strict coding standards and guidelines, to produce health statistics.
As Mortality Clinical Coder you will use your excellent knowledge of diseases and disease progression to learn and excel in the highly specialised task of classifying causes of death.
Joining our Mortality Clinical Coding team, you will be responsible for producing high quality national coded cause of death data for use in statistical analysis, research, evaluation of health services, and national and international reporting. Our engaged and cohesive team of nine staff members (team leader, 6 mortality clinical coders and 2 data administrators) take great care in the work they do because they understand the high value of the data they produce.
Training will be provided on the job via a mix of one-on-one in-person tuition and remote learning via Teams. As soon as you have demonstrated you can learn and work with a level of autonomy flexible hours and remote working from home will be an option for you. Regular team interactions and support will be ongoing.
You will report to the Team Leader Mortality, in the Classification and Terminology Team.

**Some of your responsibilites will include**:

- Abstracting and analysing relevant clinical information from medical documentation, including medical certificates of cause of death, post-mortem reports, coroners' findings, pathology reports and coded hospital discharge summaries. - Accurately coding causes of death using the World Health Organization's International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), along with the WHO's complex mortality coding rules and guidelines for selecting the underlying cause of death
- Ensuring data is complete and accurate by contacting data providers, where necessary, to obtain missing clinical information
- Accurately inputting coded data into the mortality database, ensuring each record is matched to the correct identity
- Contributing to the development and continuous improvement of processes and procedures within the team

Mōu | About you
As someone with a background in clinical practice (e.g. medicine or nursing) or hospital clinical coding, who enjoys working in a team environment, you will enjoy this opportunity to continue using your clinical knowledge to benefit the quality of our national mortality statistics as an alternative to continuing in clinical practice.
