We have a new and ambitious strategy focused on improving conservation outcomes. We are seeking an exceptional leader to form and lead our Security Team to protect our people, partners and assets and enable them to achieve better results for our precious and unique ecosystems, species, and spaces.

He angitūtanga | About the role
As the Chief Security Officer, reporting to the Director Health, Safety and Security you will be responsible for leading the formulation, ownership, and implementation of our Security Team. DOC's work is primarily operational, field and action orientated and spread over a large footprint throughout the country, so your work will be diverse, dealing with security matters such as supporting our national predator control programme using 1080, protestors occupying land, building security or social media threats. Additionally, you will lead and communicate a clear strategy for DOC's approach to security and safety ensuring that we are compliant with the Government's PHYSEC Protective Security Requirements.
As the ambassador for the security team, you will connect with teams throughout the organisation along with external stakeholders, other government agencies, contractors, and iwi and tangata whenua.

**Additional responsibilities include but not limited to**:

- Building on the work done to date to embed the security framework and governance structure.
- Build a security culture ensuring DOC staff, contractors and volunteers have all necessary information, training, and support to be safe, and respond appropriately to incidents.
- Lead effective responses to threat and emergency situations.
- Enhance and promote DOC's interests and reputation as a credible partner in the NZ security community.
- Build on work already undertaken on developing and implementing the security system design. Ensure strategies support this system design and a cohesive and formalised plan is implemented. Provide recommendations on DOC's security team structure to deliver this system.
- Review DOC's security policies, protocols, standards, and guidance; develop and implement plan to ensure they comply with Government's PHYSEC Protective Security Requirements.
- Assess and develop a plan to increase organisational capability across security dimensions.
- Ensure security is integrated with DOC's risk management, audit, and assurance processes.
- Audits and compliance projects.
- Achieving and maintaining security certifications.
- Managing third party suppliers and vendors.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
You will bring contemporary knowledge, experience, and expertise in building, leading and growing security teams to align with the organisation's needs and in particular establishing security frameworks and governance in the public sector. To be successful in this role you will have managed large security and investigative systems and ideally have experience with security system development work.
You will have the ability to self-manage and work across a diverse portfolio of security issues working both autonomously and collectively as part of a team. Experienced, capable, and strong relationship management skills are essential.

- Skills and experience in leading a security function in a large organization.
- Experience in leading emergency response planning and operations.
- Experience in investigations management.
- Able to achieve and maintain a NZ national security clearance up to and including SECRET.
- Systems and IT savvy with an understanding of the current threats within social media and cyber-security.
