New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for reducing crime and enhancing community safety. We work in partnership with iwi, communities, businesses, individual, and other public sector agencies to achieve our vision to have the trust and confidence of all.
Our tohu is a distinctive mark that symbolises New Zealand Police’s commitment to Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi. It originates from the whakatauākī / proverb given to the New Zealand Police by Ngāti Porou iwi leader Dr Apirana Mahuika, who was a member of the Commissioner’s Māori Focus Forum. The design depicts ‘Ngaru’, the waves of time, and ‘Haere Whakamua’, a vehicle towards common goals.
The words of the whakatauākī inspire courage in the face of adversity and thereby hint at the enormity of the task with which Police face. These words inspirationally capture Dr Mahuika’s vision for a new relationship between Māori and Police.
