Drive data-driven insights and policy recommendations to influence key business decisions and economic strategies
- Make a positive impact within a new centralised government agency
- Work in a collaborative environment that values your professional input and expertise
This role is permanent, located in central Wellington, New Zealand.
**About the Ministry for Regulation**
The Ministry for Regulation is a newly established small government agency with a big job to do. We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.
The New Zealand government uses regulation to protect communities from harm, and to improve outcomes for its people. Our job is to help improve the overall quality of regulation - and the way it is implemented - by working across the public service with experts in their fields.
**About the Team**
The Policy business group is a dynamic and proactive advisory group that provides strategic guidance to the government. They oversee and manage the regulatory framework, offering valuable advice to enhance and improve laws and regulations. The Economics team, part of this business group, collaborates across the Ministry, delivering insightful economic analysis and recommendations to inform decision-making.
**About the Role**
The Senior Economist will play a key role in delivering high-quality economic analysis and advice that supports the Ministry's core operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Analysing quantitative and qualitative data to shed light on the quality and effects of regulation
- Critically reading and reviewing academic and policy research and combining it with various analysis to form opinions about areas with regulatory issues
- Bringing economic theory to the analysis of industries, markets, and regulatory systems
- Preparing detailed reports for both technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborating with internal teams and external partners to evaluate policy.
The Senior Economist will also contribute to the Ministry's long-term strategy, ensuring rigorous economic insights guide policy development.
**About you**
**Additionally, you will bring**
- Confidence in handling quantitative data, excellent data hygiene, and experience in designing statistically sound analytical approaches to draw insights from data
- Strong written and verbal skills to effectively convey complex economic concepts clearly, tailoring your writing to ensure that both technical and non-technical stakeholders can understand and act on your findings
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work collaboratively to manage high volumes of work in a dynamic and exciting environment
- The ability to quickly come up to speed on new policy areas.
An existing understanding of the machinery of government would be useful.
