Mediators play a critical role under the provisions of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986, and the key activities of the role are to work in partnership with the rest of our dispute resolution team to provide expert problem-solving support, information and assistance to landlords and tenants, to resolve problems in any aspect of a tenancy relationship, with the objective of helping people to reach an agreed settlement and to assist in improving the relationship between the landlords and tenants.

You will enjoy working in an often fast paced and dynamic environment utilising a range of different approaches in your practice to meet our client’s service needs. This will include a mix of telephone mediation work coupled with in-person, and videoconference delivery of mediation.

As a result of significant changes in the residential tenancy environment and feedback received from our customers, we are looking to support our customers more actively. We aim to provide a more customer centric service which focuses on giving customers access to information early in the dispute resolution process and support in navigating the right pathway for them along their dispute resolution journey.

**About you**:
You are someone who ideally has a working knowledge of the residential tenancy market in Aotearoa. You will also have previous experience working in the delivery of mediation, conciliation, negotiation, and conflict resolution services.

Most important is your passion to help customers work through their disputes, repair relationships and resolve differences.

You are open-minded, engaging and enjoy working with people across a range of different cultures and backgrounds, and will have an understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

**What this role will give you**:
As a Mediator within the Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service, you will get to help people in tenancy related disputes to achieve resolution, and to help customers understand their rights and obligations in respect of the tenancy relationship.

Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and experience required:

- An understanding of the drivers of conflict, disputes, and relationship issues
- An understanding of the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 and associated statutes and contract law
- Previous experience as a mediator, conciliator or similar is an advantage
- Ability to work confidentially and professionally within emotionally charged environments
- Experience working with Māori, Pasifika and other peoples and cultures
- Ability to earn the confidence and respect of customers we engage with and our stakeholders
- Ability to engage with and manage a room of professional and lay people
- Ability to work effectively using a range of different mediation modes (telephone, video conference or in person as required)
- Accreditation from a dispute resolution professional body (either AMINZ, Resolution Institute or law society) or willingness to complete this qualification
- Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment
