Te Komihana Tauhokohoko | The Commerce Commission is New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency. Our mission is to make New Zealanders better off by ensuring our markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident participants in those markets.
The Commission is going through an exciting period of growth, driven by increases in its functions, duties and powers. Of particular note for market regulation, the Commission has recently begun regulation of the groceries sector, fuel markets and retail payment systems, in addition to its pre-existing responsibilities for telecommunications and in the dairy supply chain.
As our areas of regulation grow, we have been transforming as an organisation and adopting a more collaborative, cross-functional approach to the delivery of legal services. Our lawyers and paralegals all work together in one branch, creating one of the largest in-house legal teams in the country.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
As our new Chief Legal Counsel you will lead out on ground-breaking activities to protect and improve outcomes for all New Zealanders. This role will also involve supporting the Commission in active engagement with Māori.
The team is close-knit and our lawyers care deeply about promoting good outcomes in markets for the long term benefit of New Zealand consumers. The team has a strong track record of high performance..
This is a permanent role that may be based in our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) office.

**To be successful in this role, you will have**:
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
- Current New Zealand practising certificate
- 10+ years' Post Qualification Experience
- Expert knowledge of the Telecommunications Act and administrative law
- Exemplary legal research and analytical ability
- High level of verbal and written communication skills
