New Zealand Technical Recruitment Solutions Full time

**The Company**
This company design a range of products that can be retrofitted onto heavy machinery to add to and improve its functionality and efficiency and increase worker safety.

The business has a key drive to save people’s lives by using their machinery in dangerous working environments.

Their products have global scope, and they have local partner companies around the world, so there is a large market for their products.

**Why work here?**
There is a lot of excitement around development of new products that get exported to the world.

The company are also keeping up with movements in technology and moving into more sustainable products too such as electric battery and motor driven products.

Plus, you will be part of developing how the controls are developed here, an opportunity to make your mark.

The company’s existing products have a good name in the market as they are in a niche market and are safe and reliable. Their products are field tested, and the company can also draw on real world experience from people in a co-owned business who use their machinery day to day.

This is a salaried role, and the company aim to keep salary levels competitive.

**The Role**
This role sits within the R&D Team involved in engineering design of new heavy mechanical products and making upgrades to existing products.

You will report to the R&D Manager and work most closely with another Junior Mechatronics Engineer and a Senior Matlab Simulink Engineer.

You will be the software and controls go to person for the company, so you will need to know your stuff and be able to work fairly independently.

You will be primarily developing new control systems for their new products but also upgrading the controls of existing products too, currently PLC controlled hydraulics systems with relays. For example, you will be developing control systems programs for mobile controllers on hydraulically controlled heavy machinery, and also on new electric battery run machinery that is in development.

So, you will mainly be using CANopen, and CODESYS (Function Blocks & Structured Text) to program reliable safety critical control systems. You will create virtual models of the controls on the machinery to allow repeatable testing for any future program upgrades or changes, and to help with testing, fault-finding, and bug fixes. You will also use QML to design the machinery interfaces (HMI’s).

Hours: This is a 40-hour week role.

**Does this sound like you?**
- Degree qualified e.g., in Mechatronics, Industrial Automation & Robotics, Software, Computer Systems, or Electrical Engineering
- 3 + years’ experience at least, but ideally more
- PLC Programming experience with Function Blocks and Structured Text
- Experience using CAD for electrical schematics, panel layouts, and documentation (the company use EPLAN)
- Designing safety critical control systems

**Nice to Have Experience**
- Object oriented programming experience e.g. with JavaScript
- Modelling and simulation using Matlab Simulink (they already have an expert in this)
- QML
- Wireless communication protocols
- CAN and J1939
- Basic understanding of Linux
- V-Cycle development strategy
- Familiarity with test automation and requirements-based testing
