Auckland City, New Zealand Auckland Council Full time

Influence the protection of Auckland’s iconic volcanoes, geological features, landforms, and indigenous ecosystems
- Be part of a collaborative, expert-led, and supportive working environment

**He angitūtanga: The opportunity**

We are looking for a geologist, geomorphologist, or earth science professional to join our Environmental Services team. This is a permanent full-time opportunity to be part of a passionate, multidisciplinary unit woarking to protect the unique natural features of Tāmaki Makaurau.

You’ll be at the forefront of efforts to protect and manage Auckland’s remarkable natural landforms—ranging from iconic maunga (volcanic cones) and lava flows, to fossil forests, coastal cliffs, sand dunes and other significant geological and geomorphological features.

Our team provides specialist advice and support across Auckland Council functions—covering resource consents, policy, compliance, parks and open space management, biosecurity, and biodiversity initiatives. We also lead and deliver projects that enhance the protection, understanding, and restoration of indigenous ecosystems and landforms across both public and private land.

This role has a strong regulatory focus, particularly in supporting Auckland Council’s consenting and compliance teams. It’s a great fit for someone keen to use and grow their expertise in applied geoscience within a practical, policy-informed, and place-based context.

Based in Auckland’s City Centre or Albany, this role also offers flexibility to work from other locations.

**He kōrero mōu: About you**

We’re looking for someone with:

- A background in geology, geomorphology, or physical geography—ideally with 3-5 years’ experience in environmental planning, natural heritage management, or similar
- Proven ability to identify element and geological history of landforms and geological features, and translate complex science into practical advice and guidance
- Familiarity with the Resource Management Act (RMA) and undertaking or reviewing effects assessments
- A collaborative, customer-focused approach and passion for protecting Auckland’s natural environment

You’ll be confident working across disciplines and comfortable engaging with planners, engineers, iwi/hapū, landowners, and internal stakeholders to support sound decision-making and deliver practical outcomes.

Experience in ecological, freshwater, or biosecurity fields is a bonus—but your primary focus will be geological and geomorphological features and processes.

Please note:

- A full NZ driver’s licence is required
- This position is designated a Safety Sensitive role - a Drug and Alcohol test will be conducted prior to offer

**Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer**

You’ll join a diverse, expert-led Environmental Services team where wellbeing, learning, and career development are prioritised. You’ll work across the Council family and with a wide range of partners including mana whenua, community groups, Non-Governmental Organizations, schools, and central government.

This is a rare opportunity to use your geology or geomorphology expertise to directly influence how we protect, plan for, and manage Auckland’s extraordinary natural features—now and into the future.

Auckland Council is the largest local government council across Oceania, serving over 1.7 million people and contributing towards making Tāmaki Makaurau a world-class city.

We offer a range of employee benefits and proudly support flexible working options where possible.
