The School of Science (SOS) is seeking a Laboratory Technician/Administrator to provide both technical and administrative support for the effective operation of the Science teaching and research laboratories. The role will have a particular focus on Microbiology, Chemistry, and general Science disciplines. The Technician will support academic staff and students by ensuring laboratory environments are safe, well-maintained, and fully equipped, while also assisting with practical sessions, research activities, and associated administrative duties. The role may require frequent heavy lifting and the handling of materials or equipment that could exceed standard weight limits.
Laboratory Support (Microbiology, Chemistry, and General Science):
- Prepare, set up, and clear away equipment and materials for laboratory classes and practical sessions.
- Assist with the preparation of reagents, media, microbial cultures, and chemical solutions.
- Support laboratory-based teaching and research activities, including microbial culturing, basic titrations, and analytical tests.
- Maintain laboratory equipment through routine checks, calibration, and minor repairs.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, biosafety, and chemical handling regulations.
- Safely manage and dispose of chemical and biological waste.
- Provide technical assistance to students and staff during lab sessions.
Administrative and Operational Support:
- Monitor and maintain laboratory inventory, including ordering and restocking of consumables, chemicals, and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of laboratory procedures, equipment logs, and safety documentation.
- Support the preparation and documentation of risk assessments, safety data sheets (SDS), and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Contribute to compliance reporting, audits, and quality assurance processes.
- Provide general administrative support for teaching and research activities, including data entry, filing, and coordination of meetings or training sessions.
- Support the running of the School of Science store, including accepting/despatching deliveries, inventory management and data-entry, purchasing and ordering.

Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in science or a related scientific field.
- Laboratory experience in microbiology, chemistry, or applied sciences.
- Knowledge of basic microbiology lab skills (eg, Aseptic technique, media preparation)
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, including handling of microorganisms and hazardous chemicals.
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to understand, interpret, and follow strict protocols
