Ngā kawenga | About the role
As Manager Strategic Policy, you will be responsible for leading a team of advisers who lead and provide policy analysis and advice on a diverse range of complex issues affecting the Corrections portfolio and criminal justice sector. You will also lead the departments specialist inquiries function servicing external inquires and commissions.
The Strategic Policy team play a key role in delivering advice aligned with our strategic direction and you will influence others to so by partnering internally to ensure strategies and key pieces of work are aligned with the vision outlined in Hokai Rangi.
Your real key area of focus in this role will be to provide strong leadership and development to your team, strengthening the capability and performance to ensure a high level of delivery in all areas.
You will report directly to the Director Policy, Research & Performance, within a broader Strategy and Corporate Services Group. These teams have recently been bought together to drive the provision of coherent strategic advice that supports the development, delivery and measurement of our strategy, Hōkai Rangi, and improved outcomes for people in our management.
Your team is based in Wellington, and some flexible working options are available.

You are an experienced people leader who works collaboratively to drive performance at a team and organisational level. Ideally you have significant exposure to the Justice Sector environment and the ability to navigate shifting priorities and work programmes in the public sector. Most importantly, you have a can-do attitude and connect with our values.
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
- Proven success in building and developing high performing busy teams
- Sound knowledge of criminal justice sector issues and the political and social environment of the Department
- Can see and align with the “big picture” and make necessary connections from overarching concepts and strategic direction and take others on that journey
- Significant experience in briefing executive leadership teams and Ministers

Utu ā-tau | Salary
The midpoint of the salary range is $189,127 and the full range (85%-120%) is $160,758- $226,953 Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.
