The current OMS team consists of 7 part-time OMS general scope surgeons, 3 dual-qualified trainee registrars, 1 dual-qualified non-training registrar, 1 dental registrar and 2 dental house officers. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon (general scope and oncology/microvascular) Position Description
Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills
To be eligible for this role you must hold, or be eligible for, vocational registration as a specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with the Medical Council and Dental Council of New Zealand. You must be competent in the broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS). You must be trained and experienced in management of benign and malignant pathology related to the mouth, jaws and related structures, and in microvascular free flap reconstruction. You must have an excellent work record, an ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, and a desire for public service.
Surgical management of Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) is currently provided by the departments of Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (ORL HNS) and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS). A Multi-Disciplinary Meeting (MDM) coordinates the review and decision-making for planned care. OMS has had oncology and reconstructive surgeons contributing to this work in the recent past. The vision of the Regional HNC Service is that surgical management of HNC should be multidisciplinary (ORL, PRS and OMS) and integrated. The appointment of two OMS oncology/reconstructive surgeons is a high priority.
