He angitūtanga | About the role
As a Senior Ranger, Biodiversity you will work across the full spectrum of pest control, landscape, ecosystem and species protection and restoration. You will work closely and collaboratively with the Supervisor and be part of a high performing Aotea District Leadership Team, shaping the district's overall workplan.
A key to the success of the biodiversity work on Great Barrier Island is its delivery alongside iwi, council partners and community stakeholders. The ability to maintain and build on the existing relationships with iwi, hapū and whānau, central and local government agencies, the wider community, businesses, and volunteer groups, will be crucial.
You will provide advice to the Operations Manager on how the district work program should reflect DOC priorities through understanding national priorities and the district's needs. This is a full time, fixed term role expected to last nine months, we are happy for the successful applicant to be based on Great Barrier Island full time, or to be based in one of the larger North Island cities such as Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, or Wellington with the expectation that they are happy to commute to the island 5 days per 6 weeks. Travel to & from the island to/from your nearest airport will be paid for by the Department.
**You will also**:
- Lead the delivery of high-priority complex biodiversity tasks and relationship management.
- Alongside the Supervisor you will support the team and the mahi they do out in the field.
- Provide technical and strategic advice on matters relating to district biodiversity values/sites.
- Develop annual operational plans for the team's work and support them in their leadership of this work month to month.
- Follow treaty principles to align the work of the team with mana whenua aspirations.
- Manage and report on the biodiversity budget with a goal to planning the next years biodiversity budgets.
- You will provide advice on the direction of work plans such as pateke, kauri protection and predator control.

You will have a clear and engaging communication style and the ability to build strong relationships and collaborate successfully with others, including other DOC teams, mana whenua, the community, and stakeholders.
You will be comfortable working in a changing environment and are a strategic thinker who can see the big picture and shift the work of the district and region to align with DOC's goals. You can communicate clear and concise recommendations for the decision maker.
Desired skills / qualifications
**Experience in one or more of**:
- Species management and recovery
- Freshwater or wetland ecosystem management.
- Wild animal control including predator control, and/or ungulate management.
- Biosecurity management, e.g., for kauri protection and myrtle rust
- Plant pest control programmes or botany
**As well as**:
- Experience in working with tangata whenua and the ability to take cultural values into account when prioritising work.
- Understanding of procurement and experience in contract management.
- Experience in budget management.
- Ability to identify risks and opportunities (including for conservation outcomes, financial, organisational) and prioritise when resources are constrained.
- Understanding and experience of operational field work.
- Ability to learn and work within new Operating Systems.
- Attention to detail when working with data while maintaining a suitable overview
- A formal qualification, or equivalent relevant experience related to natural heritage (flora, fauna, or ecosystems) or conservation management
