Wellington Central
- Opportunity to shape and own your work programme
- Work alongside and develop passionate and highly engaged people
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, colleagues and Ministers
- Salary $171646 - $257,468

**Tēnei tūranga - About the role**:
This is a rare opportunity for a Policy Director to join the Workplace Relations and Safety Policy Branch. One of our current Policy Directors is leaving us to join the Employment Relations Authority, so we’re looking for a leader to join our branch with policy nous, a passion for mentoring and developing people and a motivation to make the world of work better for people. The Policy Director role is unique. While you will have a core accountability to help deliver a complex and ambitious work programme, you will also have a genuine opportunity to shape the focus of this role alongside the GM and other Policy Director.

Workplace Relations and Safety Policy is a fun and busy branch - we are committed to robust and collaborative policy advice and thrive on strong relationships, growing our people and culture, and the inherently motivating purposes of our portfolios. We have a smart and talented team and as a Policy Director here you will prioritise our people and their development, act as a trusted advisor on key policy projects and as a sounding board for managers. In return you can expect a flexible, supportive and intellectually stimulating work environment.

The nature of our work means that collaboration is key, whether it’s with social partners or our regulators, and there will be lots of opportunities for you to engage externally as well as internally. You’ll be just as comfortable fronting a stakeholder workshop as you are speaking to Ministers and colleagues across government.
Ngā pukenga me ngā wheako e hiahiatia ana - Skills and experience required:
We want a Policy Director who develops and supports the people they work with, is a natural collaborator, intellectually curious, delivery focused and has significant policy expertise. You’ll be a good leader and motivated by the opportunities ahead of us.

You will like variety and pace (no two days are ever the same) and will bring a selection of the following skills and experience:

- Experience coaching and developing people
- Sophisticated understanding of the key influences on our economy and the labour market
- The ability to think and deliver strategically
- Wide ranging expertise in policy development and analysis
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and develop and maintain effective relationships with, and gain the trust of, Ministers, senior public service officials and internal and external stakeholders
- Significant experience in leading complex work at senior levels
- Demonstrated political nous and pragmatism
- Leadership skills that are suited to a branch leadership role and a commitment to policy leadership and capability building more broadly at and beyond MBIE

What you'll get in return

The high level of trust and autonomy in this role will give you the opportunity to set and own your work programme. Your broad scope means you will develop excellent relationships and networks in our organisation and across the system. You will have a balanced portfolio of work which complements and grows your skills and expertise and be part of a team that supports each other in getting stuff done and leading the branch.

We are committed to flexibility, supporting good work/life balance, keeping you healthy and safe at work, building your knowledge of te reo and tikanga Maori, and developing your leadership skills, profile and career.
