Auckland Zoo is a global leader in animal care and conservation.

We are seeking an experienced Senior or Lead Bird Keeper to join our Animal Care & Conservation team. This role offers a unique opportunity for a dedicated professional with 5+ years of zoo-keeping experience to take on a leadership position, ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily husbandry, care, and welfare of the animals in their section, supporting the Team Leader in operational and strategic leadership, providing training, supervision, and mentorship to keepers, and engaging with the public through talks and tours.

This role requires strong communication and teamwork skills, as well as the ability to train and mentor others. A high level of physical fitness is also essential, as the role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Daily animal care and husbandry
  • Leadership and mentoring of junior staff
  • Public engagement and education
  • Exhibit planning and species action plans
  • Field conservation projects
