Role Overview

The Principal Legal Advisor (Advice) role at NZ WorkSafe, Wellington, is an advanced legal specialist position in Mahi Haumaru. This secondment opportunity for four months allows you to provide thought leadership to the legal team across complex legal issues.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide intellectual and technical expertise and leadership to the legal team as the senior technical expert on general legal advisory services, including advice and support on complex matters.
  • Offer high-quality legal services, both written and orally, identifying emerging or potential legal issues that could affect WorkSafe/the Legal team.
  • Lead tactical responses to these issues and instruct external counsel as necessary.
  • Provide training and mentoring within the legal team and undertake client relationship management responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Eligibility for a secondment, currently working at WorkSafe or in another government agency.
  • A law degree and eligibility to possess a practising certificate as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand.
  • Demonstrated highly experienced legal expertise in areas of law relevant to WorkSafe, particularly health and safety and public law/crown entities.
  • Ability to provide accurate, pragmatic, and well-researched advice across complex issues.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain good relationships and mentor colleagues.
