About the Role

The Christchurch City Council is seeking an experienced professional to lead its internal audit and risk management functions. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accountability, transparency, and resilience across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of the Council's risk management and internal audit strategy.
  • Oversee the internal audit function, ensuring robust assurance over financial, operational, and compliance processes.
  • Provide expert risk advice to senior leadership and the Audit and Risk Committee.
  • Conduct risk assessments, monitor key risks, and develop control and mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, policies, and best practices.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in risk management, internal audit, or governance at a senior level.
  • Risk and Audit management experience in a local government context in New Zealand.
  • A relevant qualification in business, finance, accounting, risk management, or a related field (CA, CPA, CIA, or equivalent preferred).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to identify and manage emerging risks.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to advise senior leaders and elected officials.
