About the Role

As an International Legal Adviser, you will be part of a high-performing team responsible for providing expert legal advice to support the government's objectives for New Zealand's international relations. This role is focused on trade law, and you will have the opportunity to work on high-profile international trade negotiations and disputes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Providing expert legal advice to MFAT, other government agencies, and Ministers on the application of international trade law;
  • Negotiating and implementing free trade agreements (FTAs) that benefit New Zealand;
  • Representing NZ in international dispute settlement proceedings, including at the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Requirements

We are looking for an experienced lawyer with the following skills and qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years PQE, with a Bachelor of Laws, including some study of international law or trade law;
  • Experience in trade law, international law, or commercial litigation;
  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively;
  • An understanding of The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti, Te Reo Maori, and Maori customs and protocols would be beneficial.
