About Us

The Ministry of Social Development is a people-centred organisation that works with communities across the country to help New Zealanders be safe, strong and independent.

We provide social policy advice to government and assistance, including income, employment and housing support to people of all ages, families, whānau and communities.

Our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi involves supporting and enabling Māori, whānau, hapū, Iwi and communities to realise their own potential and aspirations.

About Historic Claims

Historic Claims provides an Alternative Disputes Resolution Service (ADRS) on behalf of the Ministry of Social Development. This service helps claimants who have raised allegations or concerns of abuse or neglect while in State care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting claim assessments using available information relevant to the claimant, against the Historic Claims assessment framework and providing recommendations to support decision making.
  • Providing timely responses to requests for information, ensuring that released information complies with relevant legislation.
  • Working as part of a team to deliver the best outcomes for claimants who have been abused in State care.

Requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Good knowledge of applicable legislation, such as the Privacy Act.
  • The ability to prioritise work to achieve results with attention to detail and synthesise large amounts of information.
  • Demonstrated excellence in client-focused administrative and corporate advice and services.
  • Exemplary standards of written and oral communication, emotional intelligence and logical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and understand client needs, concerns and priorities.
  • The ability to read, absorb and interpret large amounts of information.
  • Commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and developing a culturally responsive service that incorporates tikanga Māori.
