Job Description

The role of the Mental Health Acute Care Support specialist is to provide high-quality, equitable, and culturally centered care to individuals presenting with mental health crises in emergency departments. This involves working closely with healthcare teams to determine triage levels and navigate treatment options and referral pathways.

This position is based within the Hutt Valley Emergency Department, where you will have close connections with Wellington and Wairarapa Emergency Department clinicians, other teams within Mental Health, Addiction & Intellectual Disability Services (MHAIDS), and external providers.

To be successful in this role, you will require expertise in mental health and addiction support, as well as experience in developing clinical, cultural, and professional skills for both clinical and non-clinical health workers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting and mentoring other health professionals in mental health and addiction triage, assessment, and processes
  • Developing and providing formal educational tools and training for other health professionals
  • Managing internal and external relationships to effectively link with other services and support optimal outcomes for individuals and their whanau
  • Developing strong networks across MHAIDS, the Emergency Department, and wider hospital services

Requirements:

  • Post-graduate qualification in Mental Health or a related field
  • Registration with New Zealand Nursing Council
  • Police vetting requirements
  • Current practising certificate
  • Full NZ driving license
