Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced legal professional to join our team as a Senior Legal Counsel or Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will provide high-quality legal advice and support to the Customs organization, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide legal advice on a range of topics, including customs and border protection, policy development, and commercial matters;
  2. Build relationships and provide advice to stakeholders, including Customs' business units, the wider border sector, and, where necessary, the wider public sector;
  3. Contribute to the development of policies and procedures to ensure effective management of Customs' functions;
  4. Work closely with senior management to achieve key outcomes and objectives;
  5. Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness;
  6. Develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and other organizations;
  7. Participate in training and professional development opportunities to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge;
  8. Maintain accurate records and reports, and perform other administrative tasks as required;
  9. Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policies;
  10. Actively promote a positive and inclusive work environment, consistent with NZ Customs' values and principles;
  11. Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in service delivery;
  12. Other duties as reasonably requested by management.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Be a qualified lawyer with at least 5 years' relevant post-qualification experience (for Senior Legal Counsel) or 1 year relevant post-qualification experience (for Legal Counsel);
  • Currently hold or be eligible to hold a New Zealand practising certificate;
  • Have excellent critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills;
  • Have knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori, the relationship between tikanga and the legal system, and the Crown's responsibilities as a Treaty partner (or a willingness to develop that knowledge and understanding); and
  • Meet the organizational security clearance requirements.
