Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency (Nz) Full time
About Us

The National Emergency Management Agency provides national leadership to New Zealand's distributed emergency management system. Our primary focus is on the performance and capability of the emergency management system as a whole, across all hazards and all risks.

We value diversity and inclusion, and we believe it is a strength. We welcome people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, skills, and perspectives. We strive to actively build te Ao Maori perspectives and capability into our day-to-day work, values, and practices.

Job Role

This role sits in the Assurance function within NEMA. The purpose of the Assurance Unit is to provide assurance to Government and the public about the performance and capability of the emergency management system. To do this, we support the development and application of consistent standards for emergency management, conduct assurance activities across the country, and provide high-quality assessments, reports, and advice to decision-makers regarding the state of New Zealand's emergency management system.

  1. Lead the development of a pragmatic assurance system, including creating standards and developing monitoring and evaluation tools.
  2. Conduct thorough assurance activities, providing valuable assessments to inform decision-making.
  3. Deliver timely and high-quality advice and reports to senior decision-makers.
  4. Support response and recovery efforts in national, regional, or local emergencies.
  5. Manage and build a high-performing team, ensuring staff wellbeing and welfare.
  6. Develop strong relationships with national, regional, and local partners and stakeholders.

NEMA has a very dynamic work environment, and as a small agency, staff are often required to pivot and change focus on their work at short notice. Attributes of adaptability, agility, resilience, and curiosity are all required on a daily basis, in and out of times of emergency response.

Our Expectations

We are looking for a candidate who can:

  • Work effectively in emergency response settings as required.
  • Develop strong relationships with national, regional, and local partners and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of Maori capability and cultural confidence within the organisation.

We expect applicants to have relevant tertiary qualifications or significant experience in the field of regulation, as well as proven experience in assurance, compliance, regulatory, or risk management programs.
