Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

About Us: The Ministry of Social Development is a people-centred organisation. We're in communities across the motu, working with partners to help New Zealanders be safe, strong and independent. Our social policy and advice inform government decisions, and we provide assistance, including income, employment and housing support to people of all ages, families, whanau and communities.

Our Approach

We're committed to supporting and enabling Maori, whanau, hapu, Iwi and communities to realise their own potential and aspirations. Our people are as diverse as the communities we serve. We care about the wellbeing and success of our people and provide a supportive and inclusive working environment where people can thrive and be who they are.

The Role

This pivotal team is essential to the Enabling Good Lives approach and makes a significant positive impact on the lives of disabled people, whanau and communities. As a Disability Support Specialist, you'll work alongside disabled people and their whanau to dream big, make a plan for the future and connect with their local community.

Your Key Responsibilities
  1. Establish respectful, trusting relationships with disabled people and their whanau to ensure they have a positive experience.
  2. Acknowledge the authority disabled people hold over their own lives and work with them to explore available resources to achieve their aspirations.
  3. Support disabled people and whanau to hold positive expectations and aspirations for their lives.
  4. Work creatively with disabled adults, children and their whanau to plan and develop the life they want, including how opportunities in the community could be accessed, what current support is working well and what new and different support could be established.
