About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team as a Senior Legal Counsel or Legal Counsel. As a key member of our organization, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality legal advice and support to the Customs organization, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance to stakeholders, including Customs' business units, the wider border sector, and, where necessary, the wider public sector;
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure effective management of Customs' functions;
  • Work closely with senior management to achieve key outcomes and objectives;
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues, stakeholders, and other organizations;
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to maintain and enhance skills and knowledge;
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and organizational policies;
  • Actively promote a positive and inclusive work environment, consistent with NZ Customs' values and principles;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and excellence in service delivery;
  • Other duties as reasonably requested by management.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Be a qualified lawyer with at least 5 years' relevant post-qualification experience (for Senior Legal Counsel) or 1 year relevant post-qualification experience (for Legal Counsel);
  • Currently hold or be eligible to hold a New Zealand practising certificate;
  • Have excellent critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills;
  • Have knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori, the relationship between tikanga and the legal system, and the Crown's responsibilities as a Treaty partner (or a willingness to develop that knowledge and understanding); and
  • Meet the organizational security clearance requirements.
