The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Takawaenga to join our team at Te Whakawhitinga, a primary social service aligned to the Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waiora vision and underpinned by kotahitanga. As a Takawaenga, you will play a key role in advocating and facilitating for Māori individuals and whānau accessing our service, while promoting Tikanga Māori and Kawa o Tainui.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advocacy and facilitation for taangata whaiora hapori and whānau Māori accessing the service
  • Facilitation of hui using Tikanga Māori
  • Communicating with taangata hapori and whānau and the team
  • Educating the service on 'Tikanga Best Practice'
  • Tautoko to the team good relationships and knowledge of the local community particularly Māori providers

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of Te Reo Māori, Tikanga and Kawa o Tainui
  • Strong advocacy and facilitation skills utilising Tikanga Māori
  • Ability to interpret for whānau Māori and support whānau Māori to communicate to wider team
  • Willingness to role model 'Tikanga Best Practice'
  • Able to provide education to clinicians on Te Ao Māori and best practice for Māori
  • Whānau centred, collaborative and partnership approach
  • Experience working in a mental health, community health or primary care setting
  • Experience working with Māori and Pasifika groups
  • Ability to take a proactive role with other organizations to achieve sustainable outcomes for tāngata whaiora
