About the Job

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of sustainable forest management in the Nelson City Council. As the key figure in this endeavor, you will oversee the transition of commercial forests to amenity forests, prioritizing biodiversity, recreation, ecosystem health, and fiscal responsibility.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the management of the council's 10,000-hectare estate.
  • Developing and delivering strategic plans to achieve the council's vision.
  • Implementing the Right Tree Right Place Taskforce recommendations.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders to ensure inclusive decision-making processes.

About You

To succeed in this role, you should possess:

  • A strong academic background or equivalent experience in natural sciences (forestry, soil science, agricultural science, resource management, environmental science).
  • Expertise in forest transition management principles, including knowledge of biodiversity, climate change, and pest management.
  • Demonstrated experience in cost/benefit analysis, program/project development, management, delivery, and monitoring.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to bring partners together.
  • A deep understanding of and commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
