Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

**About the Role**

As a Strategic Risk Governance Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the Electoral Commission's risk management strategy and driving best practices in assurance across all operations. This critical position requires an experienced professional who can lead the development and embedding of an enterprise risk framework, enhance organisational risk maturity, and ensure the Commission's activities align with best practice risk management.

Your work will focus on developing high-quality advice, supporting enterprise risk reporting, and leading assurance programme planning. You will partner with teams across the organisation to embed risk practices, support project-level documentation, and offer training that enhances risk capability. As a key advisor to senior leaders, you will provide strategic insights to guide decision-making and ensure risks are managed effectively.

This is an 18-month fixed-term role; this is a band 19 position. If you are passionate about driving risk management practices and want to influence how we deliver assurance across critical projects and operations, this is the ideal opportunity for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and embedding of the Commission's risk management framework, processes, and tools.
  • Design and implement a work plan to enhance risk management maturity across the organisation.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify risks and provide guidance on risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting on risk and assurance activities to the Executive Leadership Team and the Board.
  • Lead assurance planning, including coordinating assurance engagements and providing support on assurance assessments.
  • Deliver training to build risk management capability across teams.

About You

You are an experienced professional with a proven background in risk management and assurance, able to operate at both a strategic and operational level. Your ability to see the big picture while managing the details enables you to drive improvement across risk practices, working collaboratively to influence and upskill teams. You are confident advising senior leaders, providing insights that help shape organisational strategies.

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing risk management frameworks.
  • Expertise in providing advice and delivering assurance activities, ideally within a complex organisation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify risks and implement effective solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • A strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a commitment to applying its principles in your work.
  • A proactive, forward-thinking mindset, comfortable working independently to achieve outcomes.

Why Join Us?

We are committed to ensuring trust and participation in Aotearoa's democratic processes. As part of our team, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of high-quality electoral events, contributing to our continuous improvement efforts, and ensuring electoral integrity.
