Position Purpose: The purpose of the position is to encourage and support Massey University students to be independent learners and develop specific academic skills. This is delivered on an individual basis as well as in small and larger groups. The team works with students of all levels, studying on campus or online.Massey Core CapabilitiesDemonstrate awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its contribution to Aotearoa New Zealand society.Understand the relevance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in relation to the work of the University and the people we serve.Embracing Te Reo in relevant and practical ways in our workplace interactions and engagement with external stakeholders, demonstrating respect for Maori conventions.AccountabilitiesIndividual Support: Advising and assisting individual undergraduate and postgraduate students, both domestic and international, on writing and other academic skills to support them to achieve success and become independent learners.Regular contribution to the Pre-reading service by undertaking pre-reading consultant work.Group Support: Assist with the support of a range of embedded, as well as generic, learning support programmes, both online and face-to-face.Administration: Compile and maintain accurate records of student contacts and other activities.Liaising with centre staff to share observations and provide information regarding student appointments where necessary.Professional Development: Participate in appropriate opportunities for professional development.Develop a comprehensive understanding of discipline-specific writing and assessment requirements to provide accurate, relevant, and targeted support.Qualifications and ExperienceQualifications: Master's qualification is essential.A thesis-based PhD is highly desirable.A recognised teaching qualification is highly desirable.Experience: Experience in teaching or providing academic learning support for a cohort of adult students.Experience in assessing learning needs and providing appropriate support to aid skills development.Teaching small groups and working one-on-one with students.Working in a blended/online teaching and learning environment.Attributes:Competency or willingness to undertake professional development in Te Reo Maori, Tikanga, and Te Tiriti principles.Understand the current challenges in higher education.Capabilities - BehaviourAbility to establish rapport with students and work collegially with staff.Build on the principles of Te Tiriti in establishing and growing relationships.Capabilities - TechnicalA high level of computer literacy and proven proficiency in a Windows environment is essential.Ability to develop and deliver learning and study skills programmes both online and face-to-face.Pre-employment ChecksRequirement to pass a Qualifications Validation Check.Requirement to pass a Criminal and Traffic Convictions (Security) Check performed by the Ministry of Justice.A safety check in accordance with the Vulnerable Children Act 2014 is required, including police vetting.
