The Clinical Nurse Specialist - Acute Neurology at Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley, Wellington HospitalLocation: Based at Wellington Regional HospitalContract: Permanent (0.8) role within Neurology working 32 hours a week.

Through integration and collaboration, we are building a health system underpinned by partnership, equity, sustainability, whanau-centred care, and excellence.About the Role:The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Acute Neurology provides specialist nursing advice, care, and expertise, both in delivering direct patient care and in supporting other staff caring for patients with acute cerebral vascular issues, which includes ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, venous sinus thrombolysis, and transient ischaemic attack.They are integral to the smooth running of regional acute stroke services, both clot retrieval and telestroke service, providing training, expertise, support, and troubleshooting.
The CNS leads the development and implementation of specialty-specific pathways, protocols, and guidelines, in accordance with relevant national and international standards and guidance.There is a strong supportive and educational component to the role to ensure excellence in the care of acute stroke services.
You will work closely with paramedics, emergency department staff, radiology, senior stroke unit nurses, registrars, and consultants to ensure patients receive gold standard care and treatments.About the Team/Service/Location:The team consists of 13 neurologists, 6 registrars, 2 house officers, 6 nurses, 4 physiologists, and a neuropsychologist who work both across the outpatient department (OPD) and acute settings to deliver services to the region.
OPD clinics are run across Wellington, Hutt, Kenepuru, Kapiti, and Wairarapa.The neurology service at Wellington Regional Hospital provides the acute stroke services for our own district and also provides a regional telestroke and clot retrieval service for surrounding regional hospitals, covering approximately 1 million people.About You:Clinical expertise and experience aligning with Neurology servicesExpert level (or working towards) in Professional Development Recognition Programme (PDRP) and committed to maintaining Expert/Senior (CC) or Expert (HV) PDRPFantastic communication, interpersonal, facilitation, and coaching skillsExperience in practice development and quality improvement strategiesClinical Postgraduate Diploma, or working towards this, is the required qualification; however, there is support to complete a Master's qualification.
The prerequisite postgraduate clinical courses to undertake an RN prescribing practicum for NCNZ authorisation in RN prescribing in primary health and specialty teams provide essential clinical knowledge for the CNS role.
