Compensation: A pay rate of $4,300/month for full-time employment; Participation in Wildsight's Private Health Services Plan, a computer/phone stipend, and 2 days of vacation per month.
Location: Based in Nelson, with significant work in Salmo and less frequent work in other areas of the whole Regional District of Central Kootenay.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday (occasional evening and weekend work required).
Date Range: The position will begin as early as March 11, 2024 (as late as April 2) and run into the fall.
Start and end dates will be confirmed in discussion with interested candidates.
This position will partially cover a maternity leave.
Job Description:
This position oversees the daily operations of Wildsight's Youth Climate Corps program in the West Kootenay (WK) area.
The WK YCC Coordinator will be responsible for leadership of the crew, ensuring that the crew is operating smoothly, safely and meeting program goals.
The Coordinator will manage projects and crew members, and engage with community partners, funders, and others as relevant.
The Coordinator may also assist YCC program operations outside the WK area (as needed and as capacity allows).
Duties include:

With the support and direction from the YCC Program Manager and other team members, develop/refine plans for YCC projects in the West Kootenay, including through external partnerships.
Lead the delivery of general and project-specific training for YCC crew members with support from experts.
Manage day-to-day communications, expectations, and support for YCC crew members, including working with crew members in the field most days (TBD as needed).
Coordinate on-site project operations and oversee project outcomes.
Deliver educational content to crew members in support of our projects, debrief crew experiences and listen to crew perspectives, help crew meet learning objectives.
Serve as an ambassador of Wildsight and YCC in the West Kootenay area.
In collaboration with Wildsight's communications team, support the YCC team and crew members in producing and distributing communications content to tell the story of our work through multiple channels.
Collaborate with other YCC team members to share tools, best practices, successes, and lessons learned between the crews.
Qualifications and Requirements:

Must live in the Nelson area (or be willing to relocate on short notice).
Strong familiarity with the area, its communities, and local activities related to climate change is a strength.
Own a computer and associated equipment and be comfortable using a variety of digital tools, as well as working outdoors in the field.
Have a valid driver's license and the means to travel to various work locations around the Regional District of Central Kootenay and potentially further across the Kootenay-Columbia region occasionally to connect with team members and partners.
Candidates up to 30 years old, or those enrolled in post-secondary education, may be preferred due to youth and/or student-specific funding sources and to support our vision of youth leadership.
However, older candidates will also be considered.
Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Be able to work independently and within a team, including working remotely.
Experience, knowledge and passion for the following areas:

Group leadership and facilitation: Cultivating positive, inclusive, and productive group dynamics; developing and delivering leadership and topic-specific (e.g.
wildfire, agriculture, etc) curriculum; motivating and supervising workers in the field.
Project management: Keeping many moving parts organized, familiarity with Google Workspace and/or other project management tools.
Relationship building, both within the crew and beyond in the wider community.
Familiarity with climate change and climate action and related fields such as forestry, food, energy, ecology, justice, and others.
This season will hold an especially strong emphasis on wildfire.

We launched the Youth Climate Corps (YCC) in 2020 to connect young people in need of opportunity with work that needs to be done on the climate crisis.
This season will focus on wildfire risk reduction, local agriculture, and community education and engagement.
The West Kootenay YCC Crew will spend the majority of May and June implementing a wildfire risk reduction prescription at the Salmo Ski Hill.
The crew will spend the majority of July and August delivering workshops on wildfire-related topics to communities across the RDCK.
Other minor projects will be interspersed throughout.
Pending outstanding grant applications, there may also be significant work with local farms.
