About the roleHalter is transforming the farming industry with innovative technology that empowers farmers across the US, Australia, and New Zealand. As we grow globally, we're evolving the way we operate. Processes need to be simplified, automated, or reimagined. From frontend to backend to data, you'll be operating across a spectrum of engineering disciplines, working on projects that improve and create value across all of our teams at Halter.Building systems to monitor our fleet of collars and towers, developing tools to improve our operations, and refining customer experience through product improvements are some of the various projects you'll get your hands on in this role. We're seeking a Full Stack Software Engineer or Engineering Generalist who thrives in a self-motivated environment. This isn't your typical Software Engineering role—we're looking for a problem solver who can navigate complex challenges, simplify processes, and work beyond the typical bounds of software engineering, to deliver impactful solutions that drive Halter forward.Who we're looking forTechnical ability: Someone who has a great understanding of a wide spectrum of technical disciplines. A degree in software engineering, mechatronics engineering or similar is a HUGE bonus, but not a requirement.Proactivity & high ownership: Halter is a complex business. We're looking for someone who is a go-getter and is naturally inclined to find problems and solve them end to end. It doesn't matter what skills or experience you have, you see a problem and you figure it out. No SQL experience for a data project? Go learn it and solve it.Critical Thinking: Someone with strong opinions, loosely held. Someone who thinks critically, and applies first principles thinking to find the solution we need, and not just the solution we want.Impact-driven: We're looking for someone who works for more than just a paycheck. Someone who is intrinsically motivated by the impact their work has on real people and real animals. What your day could look likeBackend projects: Utilise cloud infrastructure, leveraging AWS services to build scalable and reliable distributed systems. Build and maintain RESTful APIs using languages such as Go, Kotlin, Java, or Typescript to support our applications and services.Frontend projects: Create intuitive user experiences, developing frontend applications using modern technologies like React for both our customers and internal teams.Data projects: Query, manipulate and visualise data to inform Halter's decision-making and strategic planning.Collaborate with cross-functional team: Working alongside experts in mechanical, electrical, firmware, and data science disciplines.Company: Dive deep into business operations, applying first-principles thinking to streamline processes through simplification, automation and internal tools. Why our team loves working at HalterDedicate yourself to solving real-world problems alongside an epic team in a culture designed around growth.A genuine and shared connection to our mission to make a difference in the world. The pride of joining an iconic New Zealand technology company. We believe in-person connections are key to driving your own growth, learning, impact, and building genuine long-lasting relationships. Strong relationships make it easier to disagree, give feedback, and do meaningful and aligned work. We don't like having heaps of rules or policies, but this means having strong, trusted relationships is critical. We're office first, not office only. This means working from the office every day is our default setting, but we flex when we need to. We have a high-trust culture, so everyone is trusted to do what's best for Halter. Our office vibe is something special, it's hard to describe until you're here, but people at Halter who have come from fully remote or hybrid companies say they could never go back - the high energy and spectacular people they are now surrounded by every day makes work so enjoyable.
