We're seeking a strategic, analytical, and adaptable thinker to join the Environment Group at Greater Wellington.
This fixed-term position, available until June 2027, focuses on strategically evaluating and refocusing GW's erosion control programme.
You can be based in any of our offices across the Wellington region.About the role:The role sits within the Environment Group's Strategy, Policy and Regulation function, which plays a critical role in enabling more effective strategy development, planning, regulation and delivery.As a Senior Strategy Advisor - Erosion Control, you will lead the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, working collaboratively to draw on the experience and expertise of the Environment Group and our partners.
Your primary focus will be on evaluating and optimizing our erosion control programme's incentive strategy, considering how we respond to external market forces and land use changes.
This role is funded through the Wellington Region Erosion Control Initiative (WRECI) programme, in partnership with MPI and supported by MPI's Hill Country Erosion (HCE) Programme.Key Responsibilities:Lead the development and implementation of evidence-based strategies to inform policy and planning.Collaborate widely to integrate diverse perspectives and expertise into strategy development.Monitor and review the effectiveness of the current approach and how it is implemented, synthesizing lessons learned.Provide strategic analysis, thought leadership, and advice to the Environment Group Leadership Team.Build strong relationships to ensure strategy development is outcomes-focused and implementable.Evaluate and optimize treatment options for erosion control in response to market forces and land use changes.Skills and Experience Required:Strategic Mindset and Business Acumen: Demonstrates strong strategic thinking and business insight.Analytical Proficiency: Skilled in analytical thinking and financial analysis.Strategic Insight: Proven experience in delivering practical, succinct, and actionable strategic advice, with a deep understanding of the challenges in guiding strategy into planning, implementation, and design.Environmental Knowledge: Understanding of farming systems, forestry, and land use economics.Cultural Competence: Experience working with mana whenua, iwi, or Maori organizations on shared outcomes and interests.Te Ao Maori Understanding: Clear understanding of te reo me ona tikanga Maori, matauranga Maori, te ao Maori perspectives, and mana whenua rangatiratanga in achieving successful environmental outcomes.Adaptability: Ability to navigate ambiguity and take a pragmatic approach to problem-solving.Collaborative Engagement: Experience in using collaborative processes and engaging with stakeholders with conflicting interests.Effective Communication: Strong communication skills, capable of conveying complex concepts clearly, influencing decision-makers, and adapting communication styles to suit different audiences, including culturally sensitive interactions with mana whenua.Project Management: Experience in project management with an understanding of when to apply different approaches.Political Acumen: Operating skills in environments with high political sensitivity and diverse views, with the ability to raise difficult issues, establish an approach, and secure commitment for implementation.Educational and Professional Background: University qualification or study with a quantitative and qualitative analysis component, and/or at least 5 years' experience in a senior advisory role with strategy and analytical accountabilities.What We Offer:Work to suit your life and whanau with our flexible working policy.We'll encourage you to grow and prosper with a range of learning and development opportunities, internal secondments and career progression.Your wellbeing is our priority - we'll provide medical and trauma insurance, support through our employee assistance programme or Manawa Ora providers, generous annual leave, along with Tangihanga leave and support.We want you to have a sense of belonging, where you can reflect your personal and cultural identity in the way that you work.Social clubs, staff networks and a friendly and inclusive culture.Great working environments across our beautiful region.How to Apply:Greater Wellington is proud to be a member of Diversity Works.
