Te Kāpehu Whetū, the "Māori Star Compass," is the name of our school located in Whangārei. This name, given to us by Sir Matua Hekenukumai Busby, along with the navigational guidance of Kupe, serves as a symbolic beacon for our students. It inspires our ākonga to embrace their Māori identity, pursue education, and develop leadership qualities, enabling them to confidently navigate their futures and assert themselves on the marae and in the world.

The position

We are excited to announce that two permanent Pou Arataki positions will be open for 2025, one located at our Kura Teina and the other at our Kura Tuakana.

We are looking for an inspirational Pou Arataki to support our ākonga, Pou Ako and Pouhere at our two kura. As Pou Arataki you will have operational oversight of staff and kura programmes, to ensure delivery of high-quality and focused teaching. You will be responsible for supervising and supporting staff, implementing curriculum and policies, managing programmes of work, while ensuring the health and well-being of our ākonga.

Our ideal applicant should possess extensive teaching experience, preferably with a background in school management, either as a second-in-charge or a lead educator. A strong understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum , Te Marautanga O Aotearoa, along with excellent interpersonal skills, well developed leadership skills and a commitment to continual growth in Te Reo and Tikanga Maori, amongst staff, ākonga and whānau.

To be successful in this role, you will require: 

  • Full registrations/certifications
  • Fluent speaker of Te Reo Māori
  • Begin January 2025
