Job Summary: The Caretaker is employed to care for the school's buildings and grounds and to carry out all duties according to the schedule set out below, during the contracted working hours.
Responsible to: The Caretaker shall be responsible to and cooperate with the Principal or, in their absence, with the Deputy Principal.
Working relationship with: All staff, School Board, contractors, consultants, and tradespeople. This working relationship extends to
students and whanau in terms of the positive relationships that all of our school staff are expected to work towards.
Standard of duties performed: The standard of duties performed will be to the highest standard possible as described by the job description.
Code of conduct: The Caretaker is expected to, along with all other staff, behave in a way that uplifts the school values. We recognise at Manuka School that positive relationships are the key to a successful school and the caretaker, along with all other staff, will work to build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, visitors and members of the wider community who relate to Manuka School.
General Responsibilities:
1. To carry out all directions related to tidiness and safety of buildings and grounds that are part of the
schedule, and those additional tasks that the Principal or, in their absence, the Deputy Principal may
request from day to day.
2. To undertake general caretaking duties, attend to minor repairs, undertake some building maintenance tasks, and maintain the school grounds and gardens, including mowing of grass areas.
3. To meet with the Principal or, in their absence, the Deputy Principal, on a fortnightly basis, to ensure clear communication and proactive responses to any emerging issues.
4. To advise the Principal on all matters of concern relating to buildings and grounds maintenance.
5. To be part of the Health and Safety Committee and to always prioritise Health and Safety of themselves, and of staff, students and all others on our site.
6. It is expected that the Caretaker should take a proactive interest in the school environment (buildings and grounds) and try to improve, as well as maintain, all areas to a high standard.
7. Comply with all board policies and relevant legislation, Health and Safety.
Job requirements:
• Gardening and performing landscape duties
• Inspecting the building, including heating, cooling, lighting, and alarm systems to make sure they are in good working order
• Attention to detail
• Consistent communication
• Ability to move from site to site
• Ability to learn new apps and software
• Great work ethic, able to go the extra mile
• Neat and tidy appearance, uniform supplied
• Friendly manner with teammates and community
• Non-smoker preferred but not essential
• Good character, good health, good English language skills
• Be punctual and work the hours and times specified
• Prioritise workload to ensure work of the greatest importance to the business is undertaken
with urgency and to a high standard
• Support and help develop a positive workplace culture
• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication skills
• Responsibly manage all business resources within accountability levels
• Undertake all duties and responsibilities outlined in this job description and all other duties as
required by the business
• Comply with all employment obligations
• Promptly undertake to complete all reasonable and lawful instructions and directions given
• Serve the business in good faith, promoting and protecting the business's best interests
• During work time, and such other times as may be reasonably required, dedicate all effort to the
execution and fulfilment of the duties, responsibilities, obligations, and instructions related to employment
• Demonstrate through own actions a commitment to Health and Safety at work when
undertaking work or observing others in the workplace
