The NZGP1 proposal was approved by the Commerce Commission in February 2024. More information is available here: NZGP Latest updates | Transpower

**About the team**

Our Grid Delivery division is accountable for the delivery of all work across New Zealand's transmission network. This includes increasing project and maintenance work, delivered in conjunction with our service provider organisations.

The HVDC & Power Electronics team supports Grid Delivery by providing operational and maintenance support of Transpower's HVDC & Power Electronics assets. This includes supporting projects associated with these assets and future planning that will ensure asset efficiency.

**About the opportunity**

You'll join a friendly and supportive team who together ensure that all equipment and systems associated with the Transpower HVDC link, power electronics assets (Static Synchronous Compensators, Static Var Compensators), Synchronous Condensers, and Reactive Power Controllers are monitored, maintained, repaired, and operated in accordance with agreed standards.

With no two days the same, you'll enjoy dynamic work that includes:

- Fault response and major fault investigations (once trained you will be rostered onto our call-out scheme where you will provide 24/7 technical support for one week each month)
- Site work at substations around New Zealand e.g. HVDC Link: Benmore to Haywards electricity cable | Engineering NZ
- Project technical support
- Equipment commissioning/operational acceptance

The grid of the future will move away from large rotating machines and use more power electronics as our generators move to inverter-based systems. You'll be involved in exciting future projects including:

- New Ōtāhuhu STATCOM - to be commissioned by mid-2025
- $50m of work planned for the HVDC Pole 2 half-life extension project - to be commissioned by mid-2026
- 2x SVC refurbishments at Islington and Albany
- Synchronous Condenser control and excitation system replacements at Haywards
- HVDC capacity upgrade works, including a new Haywards STATCOM
- Cook Strait Cable replacements/upgrades

**What will you bring?**

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and a high level of computer literacy, particularly with Microsoft Windows based systems

**Your CV, and cover letter will demonstrate**:

- Work in HVDC _in practice_ underpinned by CPEng or an international equivalent along with seven or more years of industry experience. You will have proven ability to coach and mentor to build capability and transfer knowledge.
- Knowledge of HVDC & Power Electronics assets, including primary and control and protection
- Sound knowledge of asset management principles
- Project engineering experience, risk management and assessment
- Knowledge of Siemens control systems (Simatic TDC, etc) and or Hitachi Energy controls (MACH)
