**About Aotearoa Refugee and Migrant Support Services (ARMSS)**:
**About the Role: Youth Mentor**

The Youth Mentor will be part of a team that works very closely together to develop the most appropriate plan and to deliver the appropriate support for the whānau and the tamariki. The team meets on a regular basis to ensure that they are all on the page with the family. Youth Mentor works closely with the Whanau Support Worker and the Social Worker to ensure that their interaction with the child takes into consideration the family’s values, culture, background, and dynamics as well as anything else that the team believe should be included in the youth mentors plan for the child. Youth Mentors possess different set of skills that enables them to work with children with different challenges, trauma from their home country, resettlement trauma, cultural challenges as they must juggle 3 or 4 different cultures: home culture, New Zealand culture, teenager culture and school culture. In addition to these challenges, most children referred to the CAPS (Culturally Appropriate Parenting Support) program usually live with dysfunctional families most of the time.

The Youth Mentor will be meeting with the children, undertake research, meet with the Whanau Support Worker, Social Worker and Program Manager on a regular basis, develop plans and to implement them. The Youth Mentor will also be required to write reports, update case notes, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders on a regular basis. The role will also involve a community development element which the youth mentor will research and develop projects for the youth as well as coordinate and/or deliver the projects when required.

**Who this job is suitable for? Some one with the following**:

- A degree in a related field such as cultural studies, communications or psychology, and/or equivalent experience.
- Culturally competent in New Zealand culture as well as their own culture.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with community partners and with clients while setting appropriate boundaries and acting as a role model; sound judgment, able to maintain confidentiality.
- Collaborates with other Community Outreach staff to build external partnerships and community engagement.
- Passionate about helping and supporting people understand and integrate in their new society while respecting their own values and culture.

In this role, you are considered a Children’s Worker.
In this role we are looking for someone to work around 10 hours per week.
