At Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, we work to provide services and support nationally, regionally and locally to the education sector, and in some cases, directly to ākonga and whānau.
We help shape the policies, settings and performance of the education system for early learning, schooling and tertiary. We do this by building relationships and understanding the needs of those who receive our services.

About our group

Mō tēnei tūranga | About this role
Principal Advisors provide leadership and support to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of high-quality services. The role of Principal Advisor will also be required to take responsibility for aligned deliverables and lead discrete pieces of work as agreed with their direct manager.
This role will also specifically support the Director of Education, through providing and brokering specialist advice and guidance, assisting with communication, reporting and monitoring, and tracking risks and issues. The Principal Adviser will need to be highly responsive to support rapid requests for the Director or wider groups, including media or ministerial requests.
The Principal Adviser will also support strategic planning for key priority work with the Manager Planning and Advice. This role will also require strategic agility to work across multiple teams and build a range of relationships and partnerships across Te Mahau in support of the Leadership Team.

Mōhou ake | About you
To be successful in this role you will have the following experience:
- Experience in a complex organisation
- Experience in building relationships and partnerships to achieve shared outcomes
- Able to write with clarity using the active voice and sequencing content so that it d delivers messages effectively
- Significant experience liaising with, communicating to, consulting with and influencing stakeholders
- Proven record in translating information into cogent arguments and presenting high quality, timely and credible advice to high level decision makers
- Sound understanding of Machinery of Government, public sector delivery structures and systems
- Working understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications for the work of the Ministry
- Ability to work within the Ministry structures policies and priorities, influencing improvement opportunities and creating synergy
- Previous experience of effectively leading projects and change in large and complex organisations
- Previous experience of planning, risk, performance management and / or assurance
- Understanding of issues involved in the effective implementation and achievement of outcomes in the social sector
