Senior Analyst, Retail Payments System
The Market Regulation branch of the Commerce Commission is responsible for regulating the telecommunications, fuel, dairy and retail payment systems. It will also soon be the home of our grocery regulatory responsibilities. It is a fantastic time to join Te Komihana Tauhokohoko.
Ko mātou tēnei | Who we are
Te Komihana Tauhokohoko | The Commerce Commission is Aotearoa New Zealand's competition, fair trading, consumer credit and economic regulatory agency. Our mission is to make New Zealanders better off by ensuring our markets work well and consumers and businesses are confident participants in those markets.
The Commission is going through an exciting period of growth, driven by increases in its functions, duties and powers, and supported by additional Government funding.
Our Market Regulation branch has recently taken on new regulatory responsibilities for retail payments, and we are growing our team. We are looking for Senior Analysts who are passionate and keen to learn about the retail payment systems, and bring strong policy, analytical and problem-solving skills to the team. You will be in the thick of our analytical work that will support the successful implementation of the new regime.
You'll work in our Market Regulation Branch where our aim is to ensure the performance of regulated businesses and markets produce long-term benefits for New Zealand consumers. This is a permanent position, based in our Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), or Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) office, with flexible working options available.
Mō te tūranga | About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Retail Payment System, you will provide key insights, undertake meaningful analysis, and deliver quality outputs to support our new retail payments activity. This is an opportunity to make a real difference for New Zealanders as the retail payment system affects all parts of our economy. We believe improved competitiveness and efficiency in the sector will lead to better outcomes for businesses and consumers.
Being involved from the beginning means you will help shape our analytical frameworks and help ensure our work is targeted and delivers better outcomes for businesses and consumers. You will have the opportunity to work across each of our main regulatory activities: rule setting, monitoring market performance, and compliance and enforcement.
As a key member within the team, you will play a critical part to ensure that the retail payments system is competitive, efficient and capable of supporting continued innovation for the benefit of consumers, businesses and the broader economy.
You'll work collaboratively with different skillsets in our multidisciplinary team, as well as across other branches in the organisation. You'll need to be comfortable working with legal and economic regulatory concepts, be able to wrap your head around this complex system and deal with a certain level of ambiguity. You'll also have direct engagement with our decision-makers, the Commissioners.
He kōrero mōu | About you
First and foremost, you have a positive attitude and thrive in a team environment. Some knowledge of the payments, banking and/or finance sectors is helpful, but not essential. You will also be someone who has:
