The Planning & Strategic Transport Unit is at the forefront of managing the transformation of the City so that Christchurch in the future is a sustainable and resilient city, prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.

The team are strategic thinkers, outcomes-focused and highly collaborative, and now need like-minded people to join them in delivering a programme of policy and planning projects to shape the future growth and urban form of our city. Within the Unit, you will be part of a dynamic planning and policy team which has responsibility for the Christchurch District Plan, spatial planning including the preparation of a spatial plan for Greater Christchurch, responding to the National Policy Statement on Urban Development, strategic transport and land use integration, planning for emission reduction and working with coastal communities on climate change adaptation. The Team also undertakes collaborative planning with sub-regional partners on addressing issues facing the Greater Christchurch area.

We are looking for an innovative and adaptable individual with a demonstrable knack for working in collaboration and building relationships. You'll be supporting the wider team and advising other Council staff on all aspects of urban planning. Working closely alongside key stakeholders and the wider community will ensure you identify and advise on emerging challenges and opportunities in the City.

You'll ideally have a background in policy planning and be able to adapt yourself to local government complexities. It is also an exciting time to be working in planning with the reform of the Resource Management Act underway, so the ability to be flexible to work under new legislation will be important.

Whilst staff working at the Christchurch City Council are not currently required to be vaccinated, applicants need to be aware that should the COVID-19 environment change, roles across the organisation will be assessed, and the requirement to be vaccinated may be reviewed.
