Wellington City, New Zealand New Zealand Government Full time

The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment is seeking a senior legal advisor to assist his investigations and provide robust advice to improve the environment. This is a chance to
- Work across the breadth of environmental law
- Discuss and debate topical issues and investigate important issues that are overlooked
- Influence changes that will benefit the environment

This is an opportunity you can't find anywhere else.
The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment's role is to provide independent advice to Parliament on environmental matters. The Commissioner's work has impact - it causes people to review what they are doing and how they are doing it, and helps change the law. The effectiveness of the Commissioner's advice depends to a large degree on the independence, integrity and quality of the work undertaken by the highly skilled team of advisors within his Office. You will be part of that talented multidisciplinary team.
If you take the environment seriously and like variety and debate, this job is for you.
You will be reviewing Bills before Parliament to advise on their environmental impact and recommend changes. A significant current focus is the once-in-a-generation resource management reform. As part of the Commissioner's issue-focused investigations, you will analyse current regulatory practice and implementation and recommend improvements. The work straddles the entire suite of New Zealand's environmental law - from conservation to waste to biosecurity and beyond. The Commissioner also possesses powers under the Environment Act 1986 to be heard in environmental hearings. You will also provide general legal advice for the office.
To be successful, you will have at least 5 years' experience of legal practice in resource management and environmental law in either private practice or government. You must have been admitted to the Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor and be eligible to hold a practicing certificate. An understanding of the legislative and policy-making processes is desirable. You will possess excellent communication and engagement skills. You will be able to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
