We have an exciting new PhD opportunity to uncover nature's control of floral abortion/retention using a unique kiwifruit model system. This will result in alternative and novel approaches to manipulate crop yield. This PhD project is part of a recently MBIE-funded Smart Idea project on 'How many flowers? Sugars, hormones and dioecy'.

The project aims to develop new understanding of floral abortion mechanisms that control flower numbers through intense competition for limited sugar supply during early shoot development. This knowledge will create future opportunities to balance crop yields by reducing chemical and manual labour techniques; currently the major means to control flower numbers. You will be trained to use methods of phenotyping (physical, transcriptomics, metabolomics), data integration, genotype characterisation and marker design. The specifics of the PhD study within the overall project target will be developed and decided in consultation between the student and the PFR and university supervisors.

Applications welcome from domestic and international applicants. This three year scholarship offers a tax-free stipend of NZ$33k per annum, full tuition fees (University of Auckland) plus research costs.

- Experience with plant molecular biology and/or plant molecular physiology, together with effective written and oral communication skills will be essential.
- Ideally the ability to commence the Studentship by July 2023.
