The Office of the Inspectorate Te Tari Tirohia works to ensure all people under Corrections' management are treated in a way that is fair, safe, secure and humane.
The Inspectorate is part of the Department of Corrections, but functions independently to ensure objectivity and integrity. The Inspectorate provides critical oversight of the Corrections system and operates under the Corrections Act 2004 and the Corrections Regulations 2005.

**The Inspectorate**:

- carries out inspections of prisons
- investigates complaints from prisoners and offenders in the community
- investigates any deaths of people in Corrections' custody
- carries out other investigations where necessary
- monitors situations where there are concerns.

Mō te tūnga | About the role
Two of these Inspector positions will report to the Principal Inspector Investigations and Complaints. The role may be based either in Wellington (at National Office) or Auckland (at Whare Whanonga Pono, Penrose). This team is responsible for investigating complaints, deaths in custody and other serious incidents, undertaking Visitor Prohibition Order reviews and monitoring prisoner allegations against staff.
Three Inspector positions will report to the Principal Inspector Inspections and may be based either in Wellington (at National Office) or Auckland (at Whare Whanonga Pono, Penrose). The Inspections team is responsible for undertaking prison inspections according to our Inspection Standards. From time to time, you may be required to support the work of the Investigations and Complaints team.
- Experience working in prisons and/or undertaking inspections or investigations.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Corrections Act 2004 and Corrections Regulations 2005.
- Experience working effectively with senior leaders and frontline operational staff.
- Proven ability to research and analyse a range of oral, written and statistical information.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write high quality reports and deliver constructive feedback.
- Proven experience reporting your observations and supporting your findings with evidence.
- Well-developed practices to maintain your resilience, discretion and integrity.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including being approachable.
- Good cultural awareness and an ability to engage Māori and other cultures.
- The ability to remain impartial, flexible and open-minded.

You will be a strong team player, who can also work independently as well as delivering to individual and/or team deadlines.
Please note, these roles will require regular travel throughout New Zealand, sometimes at short notice and possibly on weekends. A clean, full New Zealand driver's licence is essential.
