**Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role**

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Upper GI/HPB provides specialist nursing advice, care and expertise, both in delivering direct patient care and in supporting other staff caring for patients with Upper GI and HPB conditions. The focus is on assisting, directing and supporting the patient care and whānau with Upper GI/HPB speciality through modelling expert clinical skills, promoting best practice, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration and providing education. The CNS has an active role in the development and achievement of the strategic direction for the general surgical service.

The CNS leads developing and implementing speciality specific pathways, protocols and guidelines, in accordance with relevant national and international standards and guidance. This includes evaluating standards of care, in line with research, policy and evidenced-based practice across a range of settings.

**Mō tō mātou rōpū - About our team**

The Wellington General Surgery Unit is a quality provider of tertiary and secondary level adult services, meeting the needs of the Central Region in a timely and expert manner. The unit services a wider population of approximately 900,000. Acute and elective General surgical services are provided on two sites, Wellington and Kenepuru Hospital’s. Outpatient services are also currently provided at Wellington and Kenepuru.

The Upper GI and Hepto-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) services are two sub-specialty services within the general surgery service. These sub-specialty services provide tertiary level care for patients with benign and malignant disease from the lower North Island. Three specialist surgeons provide surgical expertise supported by a SET trainee and a junior registrar.

**Moū - About you**
- Expert level in Professional Development Recognition Programme (PDRP) and committed to maintain Expert/Senior (CC) or Expert (HV) PDRP
- Clinical Postgraduate Diploma is the required qualification however there is support to complete a Masters qualification. The prerequisite postgraduate clinical courses to undertake a RN prescribing practicum for NCNZ authorisation in RN prescribing in primary health and specialty teams, provide essential clinical knowledge for the CNS role. Note: Service and nursing leadership approval is required to undertake the RN prescribing practicum.
- Clinical expertise and experience aligning with Upper GI/HPB speciality
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, facilitation and coaching skills
- Experience in practice development and quality improvement strategies
- Comprehensive knowledge informs NZ Health System understanding including equity issues, professional leadership and emerging issues for the nursing profession.
