We are looking for an experienced principal or senior advisor who's ready to take the next step to join our Inquiry Facilitation team and play a leading role supporting the work of the Waitangi Tribunal. We're looking for someone who is highly collaborative and able to inspire and build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
To be successful in the role you will have strong verbal and written communication and analytical skills, and the ability to plan and prioritise your work and the work of the team. You will have an understanding of, and commitment to, the work of the Waitangi Tribunal and ideally bring mātauranga Māori, experience in te ao Māori and kaupapa Māori initiatives to the role. Your experience engaging with Māori, preferably in a Commission of Inquiry or Tribunal environment, will be a key strength.

You will have a tertiary qualification in law, Māori studies, public policy, New Zealand history or other relevant disciplines, and relevant public service or related professional experience. Knowledge of machinery of government and policy and Cabinet processes, as well as stakeholder engagement will be highly beneficial.
Mō te tūranga/About the Role
The Waitangi Tribunal Unit provides a comprehensive range of services to the Waitangi Tribunal, a permanent Commission of Inquiry that inquires into and reports on claims submitted by Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975.
The two Principal Facilitators in the Inquiry Facilitation team are key advisors responsible for technical leadership in the design, planning and delivery of large-scale, complex commission of inquiry hearing processes and projects. The Principal Facilitators support the Waitangi Tribunal's strategic direction by providing high quality procedural and evidential analysis and advice, and quality assurance of all the team's written advice and planning documents.
Principal Facilitators also mentor staff and inquiry teams and provide leadership in diverse inquiry processes. The Principal Facilitators work particularly closely with Senior Facilitators by providing technical leadership and oversight of all evidential hearing plans and activities.
In collaboration with the Chief Historian and research, registry and report writing team colleagues, the Principal Facilitators provide innovative thought leadership across the Tribunal inquiry programme and all types of inquiry.
Mō te tīma/About our Team
At Te Tāhū o te Ture - The Ministry of Justice, we're committed to working together for a fair and safe Aotearoa.
The Inquiry Facilitation team is responsible for facilitating official Tribunal events, providing robust procedural analysis and advice, drafting judicial memoranda-directions, evidential analysis, and inquiry planning to support the Tribunal hearings.
Strong analytical skills are required as is the ability to plan and prioritise work. The team works closely with a wide range of people including the judiciary, Tribunal members, claimants and counsel, and engages with and provides analysis and advice on a variety of inquiry material, evidence and submissions.
Joining the Ministry of Justice means you will become part of an inclusive organisation that values you and the communities we serve. It's our promise to ensure our workplace is one where our people feel healthy and safe, supported and able to be themselves at work. We value respect as the foundation for building a positive workplace culture and one where diversity is welcomed and celebrated.
